Outcome Documents: The Nassau Declaration and the Inter-American Climate Action Plan 2023 – 2030
The member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) adopted The Nassau Declaration and the Inter-American Climate Action Plan 2023-2030 at the Fourth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development held in Nassau, The Bahamas on October 3 – 4, 2023. The two landmark documents set forth commitments and strategic guidelines that collectively seek to promote actions of the OAS and collaboration between governments of the Western Hemisphere, financing agencies, and other stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to climate change that prioritize sustainability, resilience, and inclusion.
The Nassau Declaration reaffirms the commitment of member states to effectively implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on hemispheric collaboration for climate action. The Declaration reiterated the importance of the sustainable water and forestry management and nature-based solutions and charted a path towards mitigating greenhouse gas emissions while accelerating the transition to clean and renewable energy sources, leaving behind emissions-intensive energy options.
The Inter-American Climate Action Plan 2023-2030 establishes a comprehensive framework to address the urgent climate challenges faced in the hemisphere through the collaborative efforts of the OAS, other institutions of the Inter-American system and other prospective climate partners. It champions sustainable development, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, adaptation to climate change impacts, and the transition to a low-greenhouse gas, climate-resilient economy. The Plan outlines key activities, projects and programmes to be carried out aimed at accelerating clean, sustainable, renewable, and equitable energy transitions, integrated water resources management, disaster risk management, and building resilience.
The commitments consummated in the Declaration and Plan of Action will serve as the common position for the hemispheric approach to addressing climate change over the next seven years and will guide the path towards a more sustainable future for the Americas.
