H.E. DR. EUGENE G. NEWRY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS TO

MEXICAN PRESIDENT ENRIQUE PEÑA NIETO

 

Diplomatic ties between The Bahamas and Mexico were further strengthened on 19th June, 2015 during the presentation of the Letters of Credence of H.E. Dr. Eugene G. Newry to Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto, appointing him Non-resident Ambassador of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to the United Mexican States. The ceremony, which was held at the Presidential Palace, in Mexico City, Mexico, served as a golden opportunity to recognize the fraternal linkages and long standing bilateral friendship which have existed between The Bahamas and Mexico since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two Countries on 23rd January, 1974. Accompanying Ambassador Newry to Mexico was his wife, Mrs. Francoise Torchon-Newry, and Ms. Krissy Hanna, Second Secretary of the Embassy of The Bahamas, in Washington, D.C.

Noting the close proximity with which The Bahamas and Mexico are geographically situated, President Peña Nieto highlighted the good trading, business and investment relations between The Bahamas and Mexico spanning its more than three decades of bilateral engagement. He also referred to the Third Mexico-CARICOM Summit, held in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, in April, 2014, during which time President Pena Nieto, along with CARICOM Heads of State and Government, including the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, had the opportunity to discuss issue affecting the sub-region. President Peña Nieto, during the ceremony, further expressed his desire for the advancement of relations between The Bahamas and Mexico given its Caribbean connection and ongoing partnership both within the bilateral and multilateral contexts.

Following President Pena Nieto’s comments, H.E. Eugene G. Newry noted the importance of the membership and participation of Mexico and The Bahamas in multilateral organizations, namely the Organization of American States and the United Nations, alluding to the fact that the good relations between both Countries transcended its engagement at the bilateral level. Additionally, he commented on the need to develop cooperation between The Bahamas and Mexico, not solely in trade, but in areas such as agriculture, mariculture and aquaculture, tourism and security, with the aim of creating mutually beneficial exchanges in technical expertise and best practice models. In H.E. Eugene G. Newry also noted the upcoming Presentation of Credentials of H.E. Martha Jaber Breceda, Non-resident Ambassador designate of Mexico to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and the official visit of H.E. Vanessa Rubio, Under Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, both scheduled to be held in Nassau, Bahamas in July, 2015.

The Presentation of Credentials was preceded by a meeting between Dr. José Antonio Meade Kuribrena, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and H.E. Eugene G. Newry on 18th June, 2015, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, where Ambassador Newry presented a copy of his Letter of Credence.

Also presenting Letters of Credence to President Enrique Peña Nieto were H.E. Hammad Bin Ghanem Al Rowaily, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; H.E. Petros Panayotopoulos, Hellenic Republic; H.E. Kyaw Tin, Republic of the Union of Mayanmar; H.E. Palan Mulonda, Republic of Zambia; H.E. Jeremiah C. Sulunteh, Republic of Liberia; H.E. Dexter Rose, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and H.E. Gail Christian, Antigua and Barbuda.
